What RoadWitness collects

When you start capture, RoadWitness uses your device camera, precise location, motion and sensor data, and recording timestamps to create evidence records. Capture may continue in the background while the persistent Android notification is visible. A floating REC indicator is shown when you grant overlay permission.

When a signed-in user asks to preserve a reported activity, the app sends the current coordinates, horizontal accuracy, capture time, mock-location status, and optional bearing to RoadWitness to determine whether the device is on a controlled highway. The classification response contains only an eligibility result and the version of the road dataset used.

Account features collect your name, email address, sign-in provider, and profile preferences. Diagnostic information may include app version, device type, failures, and security events.

How data is used and shared

Capture data is used to create, verify, review, and export evidence you choose to preserve. Preserved evidence is encrypted and signed on your device. RoadWitness does not sell personal data. Data is uploaded or shared only when you choose an available upload, submission, or export action, or when required to protect users, enforce the law, or respond to valid legal process.

The road-classification service processes the location request only to return the eligibility result. RoadWitness application code does not store the classification request or use it for advertising, profiling, or analytics. Network and security infrastructure may process limited request metadata to operate and protect the service.

Storage, security, and retention

Rolling camera footage that you do not preserve is temporary. Preserved evidence remains on your device until you delete it, uninstall the app, or transfer it through an enabled workflow. Account records are retained while your account is active. Security, fraud-prevention, audit, or legally required records may be retained for the period required by law or legitimate security needs.

Your choices

• Stop capture at any time to stop camera, precise location, motion, and background collection.
• Manage camera, location, notification, and overlay permissions in Android Settings.
• Remove local evidence by clearing RoadWitness app data or uninstalling the app, and delete your account through the documented account process.
